According to the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. Major depressive disorder affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older. While major clinical depression can develop at any age, the median age at onset is 32. Depression during periods of grief is common, but usually temporary. No one need suffer alone. Help is available through grief counseling and therapy. Begin by talking to your family physician, a trusted friend or family member or clergy person.
